1. Management Commitment- A commitment from top level management is a must in driving this critical initiative.  This involves assigning responsibility and authority to the implementation team.  The Management Representative selected should report directly to top management.  . 
2. Planning- Assemble a team to champion the development process.  Senior management should be part of the team or provide visible support.
3. Review Consultancy Options- Independent consultants can advice you on the best way to implement your ISO Quality Management (QMS) System.
4. Training- Consider Lead Auditor training for the Management Representative, Internal Auditor training for Internal Auditors and general ISO awareness for all employee.
5. Choosing a Registrar- Consider  industry experience, geographic coverage, price and service offered.  Find a registrar who can best meet your requirements.
6. Update Quality Manual-  Revise your QM to meet the ISO requirements.  It is the top level document that outlines your operation.
7. Develop Supporting Documents- Develop operating procedures, work instructions and forms for records to meet the ISO requirements and your specific operational requirements.
8. Implementing Your Quality Management System- With adequate training and good documents, everyone should be operating to the procedures and collects records showing you are doing what you say you are doing.
9. Internal Audit- It is an ISO requirement that a complete cycle of all the ISO requirements or clauses be audited before the initial ISO assessment.  A 2-day internal auditor class runs about $800, if you can find a local ISO training provider.  Your consultant can conduct the internal auditor training.  You can also have consultants to conduct internal audits.  It is a cost effective way to meet the ISO requirement. 10. Consider a Pre-Assessment- If you are not hiring a consultant, you should consider a pre-assessment to assure that there not no major problems in your QMS.  You can correct them before the initial assessment. 
11. Getting ISO Registered- Request local ISO auditors from you registrar to reduce travel related expenses.  Your registrar will review your QMS to determine if your company should be recommended for registration.
12. Continuous Assessment and Internal Audit- Your registrar will conduct periodic ISO audits.  Internal audit function should continue according to your procedure.  A cost effective way is to hire a consultant to conduct internal audits.  Our consultants provide this service at a reasonable rate.
13. Continual Improvement- Gaining ISO certification is a major step in continual improvement. You have the foundation to integrate your quality management system into your company's business plan.  Setup measurable top level company goals and flow them down to the other functions of your company.  Practice the Plan-Do-Check-Act model to achieve your goals.
